2. Charles N.B.S. ACKLEY, son of Joseph R. ACKLEY and Cynthia Ann / Sintha SCULL , was born on 22 Oct 1880 in Gloucester City, New Jersey, died on 23 Apr 1945 in Camden, New Jersey, at age 64, and was buried on 25 Apr 1945 in Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

General Notes: The initials N.B.S. in Charles' name stand for Napoleon Bonaparte Shoe.

Our Ackley's were related to the Shoe family of Philadelphia, PA. They were admirers of Napoleon and a rich uncle of that family promised Joseph Ackley that if he named one of his children after Napoleon he would leave an inheritance for that
child. Joseph carried out his part of the bargain but the uncle didn't honor his part of the agreement and the money was never given as promised.

When Charles married Mary Bogan his father disowned him because they were Methodists and the Bogan's were Catholic. When Joseph died Charles said, "Good, I hope they bury him upside down!"

After the death of his wife Charles sank into despair and depression and became an alcoholic. He ended up spending the family's food money on drink instead of food. As a consequence the children became sickly. A concerned neighbour reported
their condition to the authorities and the children were sent to the county home at Ancora, New Jersey where the nuns helped to care for them and feed them properly.

The 1910 Census for Camden, New Jersey lists Charles, his wife Mary, their daughters Mary and Catherine, and Charles' mother-in-law, Catherine Bogan and two of her sons, Michael and Arthur.
